What are Cardiac Event Monitors and Recorders?
These are implantable devices, known as Implantable Loop Recorders (ILRs), which record your heart rhythm continuously for up to three years. It is used by your physician to help answer questions about your heart that other monitoring devices don’t provide.
This is especially useful for when your heart rhythm abnormalities occur infrequently, and could be missed by standard electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) monitors. The information recorded by the device is automatically transmitted to your doctor through wireless technology and a transmission monitor device.
Procedure and Recovery Information for Cardiac Event Monitors and Recorders:
This device is a diagnostic tool and is not used as a pacemaker or defibrillator. For implantable Cardiac Event Monitors and Recorders (e.g. ILRs), the procedure is usually performed under local anesthetic to numb the area, and can be done in hour or two.
As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks which you and your surgeon should discuss. It can take up to 4-6 weeks for full recovery from this procedure. Your physician will provide you with specific guidelines for your recovery.
